Why Here, Why Now

Real Grass Is A Losing Fight in Southern Utah

St. George sits in the Mojave transition zone. Summer highs clear 105°F for weeks, annual rainfall is minimal, and UV intensity is among the highest in the country. Cool season grass cooks, warm season grass goes dormant and brown half the year, and either way you are pouring water into the ground daily just to hold even.

Meanwhile Washington County water rates keep climbing and conservation restrictions keep tightening. A lawn that was merely expensive five years ago is now expensive and politically awkward.

Synthetic turf solves it permanently. You get a green yard that looks the same in July as it does in February, your irrigation line for that zone gets capped, and the yard stops being a chore. Done properly — and the base is what "properly" means — it holds up for 15 to 20 years.

Full Installation

What's Actually Included

Most turf complaints trace back to something underneath that was skipped. None of the following is an upcharge on our quotes.

Excavation & haul-off

We remove the existing sod, soil, or gravel to the depth the install requires and haul it away. Nothing organic is left to decompose and settle later.

Compacted aggregate base

Crushed rock installed in lifts and mechanically compacted, then graded. This is the single biggest factor in whether a lawn still looks flat in year eight.

Drainage & grading

Graded to move water away from your foundation, with perforated backing so rain and rinse water pass straight through instead of pooling.

Premium turf

High-density, UV-stabilized fiber with a realistic blade shape, multi-tone coloring, and a thatch layer so it does not read as a flat green carpet.

Seaming & edging

Invisible seams, nail-edged perimeters, and bender-board or concrete-bound borders that hold a clean line and a true radius on curves.

Infill to spec

The right infill for the job — heat-reflective for full sun, antimicrobial for dog runs — brushed in to stand the fibers up and protect the backing.

The Math

What Goes Away Permanently

Turf is a bigger number up front than sod and a much smaller number over its life. Here is what stops costing you anything the day it is installed.

Where It Works

More Than Front Lawns

Front yards

The highest-impact install. Clean paver or concrete borders, a crisp radius on curves, and instant curb appeal that holds all year.

Dog runs & play areas

Drainage-optimized base and antimicrobial infill. No mud, no dead patches, no digging up the yard after a rain.

Pool surrounds

No grass clippings in the water and no mud tracked onto the deck. Can be installed over existing concrete with a pad and drainage layer.

Putting greens

Short-pile green turf, tighter base tolerance, real cups, and contours built to the speed you want. See putting greens →

Install Process

One to Three Days

Timeline depends on square footage and how much excavation the yard needs. Here is the sequence.

  1. 01

    Measure & plan

We measure the area, check existing irrigation and drainage, and lay out borders and seam placement with you.

  2. 02

    Excavate

Existing material comes out, sprinkler heads are capped, and the sub-grade is cut to depth and hauled away.

  3. 03

    Base & compact

Crushed aggregate goes in, gets compacted in lifts, and is graded to drain. We screed it flat before anything green touches it.

  4. 04

    Install & finish

Turf is rolled, acclimated, cut, seamed, stretched, nailed, infilled, and power-broomed. We clean up and walk it with you.

Turf Questions

Honest Answers

How long does artificial turf last?
Quality synthetic turf lasts 15 to 20 years with almost no maintenance, and the products we install carry a manufacturer warranty. Lifespan comes down to two things: UV stabilization in the fiber and the quality of the base underneath. We do not compromise on either.
Is it safe for pets and children?
Yes. Our turf is non-toxic and lead-free, and pet installations get a drainage-optimized base so urine flushes through rather than sitting in the backing. It rinses clean, resists odor, and holds up to heavy dog traffic far better than real grass, which tends to develop dead patches and mud.
Does artificial turf get hot in the sun?
Synthetic turf does run warmer than natural grass in direct sun, the same way a patio or driveway does. It cools within minutes of being rinsed or shaded, and the heat-reflective infill we use in desert installations reduces surface temperature meaningfully. In St. George we will walk you through realistic expectations for a full-sun yard versus a shaded one before you commit.
How much maintenance does it actually need?
Almost none. Rinse it occasionally, brush high-traffic lanes once or twice a year to keep the fibers standing up, and blow off leaves. No mowing, watering, fertilizing, aerating, or reseeding — ever.
Will it really save money on water?
Yes, and in the desert Southwest the math is dramatic. A typical St. George lawn consumes thousands of gallons a month through the summer. Eliminating that irrigation, plus mowing and fertilizer costs, means most homeowners see the installation pay for itself within a few years — and Washington County water rates have been climbing, which shortens that payback.
What goes under the turf?
This is where installs succeed or fail. We excavate to depth, install and compact a crushed aggregate base for drainage and stability, grade it to shed water correctly, then seam, stretch, nail-edge, and infill the turf. Skipping base prep is why cheap turf installations ripple, settle, and hold water.
Can you build a putting green?
Yes. Putting greens use a different, shorter-pile, high-density turf, a tighter base tolerance, and cups with proper sub-drainage. We build contours and breaks to the speed you want, and can add fringe collars and chipping areas around the green.
Can turf go over an existing lawn or concrete?
Over grass, no — the organic layer has to be removed or it will decompose and settle unevenly. Over concrete, yes, with a drainage layer and pad, which is a common solution for patios, pool surrounds, and rooftop decks.
